Any BCKFC event always starts with the prefish. Bad. Then everyone cleans up, hooks up and goes to dinner, well, at least 11 of us who were spending the night Friday. Then the officers met in the lobby of the luxurious Galliano Inn to sort and bag baits. At 7PM, as scheduled, contestants began receiving bags, scurrying off to behold their treasures, or doom. Opinions Vary.
This year, H&H Tackle was our major donor with all 4 jigheads. Topwater Co supplied a topwater bait and bag of clips. Tail Chaser provided 2 soft plastics. Knockin Tails provided a soft plastic as did Overcast. Excellent usable bag!
Imagine picking up your baits at 5AM, rigging your poles, and launching your kayak, all in pitch dark, then waiting with a bunch of contestants for someone to yell GO! That’s exactly how it happens. The Leeville Public Launching is at the intersection of the Southeast Canal and Bayou Lafourche, so people took off in 4 directions attempting to fill their bags with 5 trout, 2 reds and a bonus fish.
Ten days before the tournament, Southeast LA experienced a rare blizzard, affecting the estuary in horrible ways, which 80 percent of the field learned, not bringing in a single fish in the best Minimalist Challenge weather in years.
The weigh in line started at 2:30 with President Matt Dearman manning the grill, providing a fabulous burger for competitors waiting to weigh in or watch. Benjamin Day and Trevor Farkas opened weigh in at 3:30.
Dan Rodbell was the first in line weighing 2 beautiful reds. Brenden Bayard put a phenomenal bag together with 5 beautiful trout and 2 slot reds and his son 5 trout and one slot red. Brenden took first, Dan 2nd and Graves 3rd. Unbelievable finish to a tough day! The 14 who weighed A fish have qualified for our Championship, congratulations!
Minimalist registrations increased by one over last year and went off without a hitch, one of the best planned and operated tournaments we’ve had in years! The weigh in was well attended and a blast. Great job officers! Thanks very much to our sponsors and members who attended!
Get ready for Trout Challenge! Hope to see you there!
