Adventures in the DDD Zone

Last Saturday,  fished the Forbidden Hole with some others. Caught a few fish but water and air temp never reached 50 degrees.  Didn't want to whine and moan, but today was an altogether different day. What a difference a week makes. 20 degree change in water temp! Too much iced tea at Catholic Lenten seafood dinner made for a restless night. Woke at 248 and finished loading up. My coffee stop got a new clerk and he wouldn't let me in, scarypants. Went to a lesser alternative and when [...]

Minimalist Challenge 2021 Report!

Friday - Day 1 After about 4 hours restless sleep, got on the road Friday at 4. No sausage biscuit but some good, rancid, gas station hot coffee.  Talked to a couple guys at the launch and met Josh Redd for a 6AM takeoff, just like the tournament would be Saturday. On a hunch, and wanting to stay away from Catfish Lake,  we went South.  I'd studied an area on Google Earth that looked promising. We pedaled an hour before we started fishing,  but as soon as we [...]

Holiday Treasures – South Lafourche

Had a fabulous meal at Vincent's uptown Christmas Eve courtesy of my bro in law, who enjoys fresh fish, frequently. Woke up Christmas day and put on a gnarly 20# prime rib, cooked breakfast for my family, and opened gifts. Restrung 2 reels while Diane handled the shrimp remoulade. Best remoulade sauce in New Orleans courtesy of Steve at Quarter View, who also enjoys fresh fish. Excellent day with the family! Slept in till 4, then rolled towards Sout Lafourche, baby. Stopped at Cash Magic in Larose for pit stop, [...]

Fall N Tide Time!

The Fall N Tide tournament, hosted by the Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club (BCKFC), is said to be one of the oldest kayak fishing tournaments still in existence. Fall N Tide is typically one of BCKFC’s largest, most attended tournaments each year consisting of a weekend long event packed full of good food, fellowship, an in-person weigh in, numerous tournament prize categories, and thousands of dollars of raffle prizes from club sponsors.  The list of raffle prizes often seems endless including items such as soft & hard coolers from [...]

Land Of The Giants

One of the top kayak fishing destinations in the world is Los Buzos. Many may not have heard of it, but that is changing by the minute. Los Buzos is a small resort located in Cambutal, Panama along the Pacific Ocean. It is a 6-hour drive from Panama City with breathtaking views of black sand beaches and rocky shores with beautiful cliffs. The fishing is nothing short of spectacular and is easily accessible by kayak anglers. The resort itself is right along the beach and the sunrises and sunsets [...]

On Golden Meadow

In the Spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. - Alfred Lord Tennyson. Obviously, Alfred Lord Tennyson wasn’t from Louisiana.  For me, Spring time in Louisiana conjures up images of trout…big trout exploding on topwater.  It is our final escape from the doldrums of February and our last true refuge before the heat of the Louisiana summer.  There’s no better place I like to chase big trout in the Spring, than Golden Meadow.  And when the trout aren’t biting, the redfish are usually very active [...]

Choupique: It’s What’s for Dinner!

Amia Calva… bowfin… grinnel… mudfish, mud pike, dogfish, swamp trout, choupique… Hearing this name for many immediately brings disgust and sometimes nausea, but I’m here to tell ya, you’d be pleasantly surprised at what this fish packs. Before cutting that line, read on to see this fish from another’s eyes… someone who’s grown up catching and cooking choupique, and always awaiting the next time he can get his hands on one. The Bowfin, most commonly know around South Lousiana as Swamp Trout, or Choupique, is by far one of [...]

Kayaks and The Navigation Rules Part 2

A few weeks back I penned an article on Kayaks and the Navigation Rules for the group.  I focused largely on lights in that write up.  I want to take things a step further here. I have been consuming volumes of information in my new position as the Recreational Boating Safety Program Manager for the 8th Coast Guard District.  In doing so I have stumbled upon some downright bad information coming from a variety of sources, some of which are fairly "official." How many of you have ever heard that [...]
