Fall N Tide Time!

The Fall N Tide tournament, hosted by the Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club (BCKFC), is said to be one of the oldest kayak fishing tournaments still in existence. Fall N Tide is typically one of BCKFC’s largest, most attended tournaments each year consisting of a weekend long event packed full of good food, fellowship, an in-person weigh in, numerous tournament prize categories, and thousands of dollars of raffle prizes from club sponsors.  The list of raffle prizes often seems endless including items such as soft & hard coolers from [...]

Land Of The Giants

One of the top kayak fishing destinations in the world is Los Buzos. Many may not have heard of it, but that is changing by the minute. Los Buzos is a small resort located in Cambutal, Panama along the Pacific Ocean. It is a 6-hour drive from Panama City with breathtaking views of black sand beaches and rocky shores with beautiful cliffs. The fishing is nothing short of spectacular and is easily accessible by kayak anglers. The resort itself is right along the beach and the sunrises and sunsets [...]

On Golden Meadow

In the Spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. - Alfred Lord Tennyson. Obviously, Alfred Lord Tennyson wasn’t from Louisiana.  For me, Spring time in Louisiana conjures up images of trout…big trout exploding on topwater.  It is our final escape from the doldrums of February and our last true refuge before the heat of the Louisiana summer.  There’s no better place I like to chase big trout in the Spring, than Golden Meadow.  And when the trout aren’t biting, the redfish are usually very active [...]

Choupique: It’s What’s for Dinner!

Amia Calva… bowfin… grinnel… mudfish, mud pike, dogfish, swamp trout, choupique… Hearing this name for many immediately brings disgust and sometimes nausea, but I’m here to tell ya, you’d be pleasantly surprised at what this fish packs. Before cutting that line, read on to see this fish from another’s eyes… someone who’s grown up catching and cooking choupique, and always awaiting the next time he can get his hands on one. The Bowfin, most commonly know around South Lousiana as Swamp Trout, or Choupique, is by far one of [...]

Kayaks and The Navigation Rules Part 2

A few weeks back I penned an article on Kayaks and the Navigation Rules for the group.  I focused largely on lights in that write up.  I want to take things a step further here. I have been consuming volumes of information in my new position as the Recreational Boating Safety Program Manager for the 8th Coast Guard District.  In doing so I have stumbled upon some downright bad information coming from a variety of sources, some of which are fairly "official." How many of you have ever heard that [...]

Kayaks and The Navigation Rules Part 1

Hello BCKFC family.  In plying social media, I often see questions asked about how kayakers (human powered craft operators) are supposed to behave in certain navigational situations.  On the navigable waters of the US, the Navigation Rules provide the legal guidelines.  Certain states may have additional laws, but here I will only focus on the Navigation Rules. You may be wondering how I am qualified to provide commentary on The Rules.  Presently I am the Recreational Boating Safety Program Manager for the Eighth Coast Guard District in New Orleans.  I [...]
